This is the church of San Clemente in Rome. It's a fabulous church to visit. The artwork is amazing and that's just on the first floor! Go beyond that and you get down to a very early Christian church, and below that a Mithraic temple. There's a really touching child's gravestone message dating from Roman times to 'our little rover' according to the translation. I'm sure this is the church called San Tommaso in Ngaio Marsh's book, 'When in Rome'. It is the also the setting for one of David Hewson's crime scenes in 'A season for the dead'.
